Editorial Review:

Queen Catherine de Medici was born into a noble family in Renaissance Italy and found her fate as the Queen Consort of France when she married French King Henry II. Thrust into the public eye and life in a new country, Catherine found herself grappling with the politics of the Catholic-Hugenot wars and dealing with the emotions that come with a straying husband. She overcame much and cemented her place in French history as the mother of three kings. Catherine de Medici has gone down in history as one of the most fascinating and strong women of her time. She led an exciting life and makes for a fascinating character study. Author Dominique Wright creates a highly engaging tale of Catherine de Medici’s experiences told from her first-hand perspective. It allows readers to embrace who Catherine de Medici was in a brand new way. The story presented in Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici is engaging and readers will find it difficult to walk away from this book.

I had never wanted those things or showed any interest in living at any court or marrying a prince. I was enjoying my childhood life in my home of Florence with my family. He sought money, power, and influence, but he wanted to use me as his little pawn to sell off and try to weasel his way into the power of the royals.”

The writing style of Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici is quite unique. It is written in a style as if Catherine de Medici is the narrator but it is being told as if she is being channeled to the present. It offers the reader an interesting look at Catherine de Medici’s experiences. According to the introduction, the author has psychic talents and is a spiritual channel. She believes that she was Catherine de Medici in a past life allowing her to provide a viewpoint of the queen that many others cannot offer. Whether the reader believes this or not, the author is certainly able to create the character of Catherine in a way that feels genuine and believable to the reader.

Everyone continued working, and I sat there quietly while Lady Marguerite finished brushing my hair; I tried to process and prepare myself for the horrific rumors and gossip from everyone at court from the news I just learned. My husband, Henry, has a new mistress, and it was my old caretaker, Lady Diane.”

The writing is fantastic. It does take a bit of time to get used to the writing style, as there are some verb changes in the beginning, and the presentation of Catherine de Medici as a channeled character but most readers should find themselves enveloped in the story rather quickly. The writing is engaging and flows well, allowing readers to stay focused on the story easily.

Life had become more pleasant for me over the years, settling into a peaceful routine now that Devon had helped to make those in the palace more understanding of the need to use royal formalities in every way. He continued with his impressive and sometimes excessive work ethic. However, he had built a good reputation and name for himself. I was able to add riding in the forests, walking in the gardens, and walking in the town markets. It was simply lovely to be able to have some glorious leisure time for myself. ”

While Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici gives readers wonderful insight into the first part of Catherine de Medici’s experiences in France and in her marriage to Henry II, it is lacking in historical accuracy and fails to give readers insight to some of the most important things that Catherine de Medici is known for such as her involvement in the Catholic-Hugenot wars and the St. Bartholomew’s Massacre. Including this would create a massive book at the pace that the story is told in Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici so it is possible that the author might follow this book up with a second. Doing so would be a wonderful choice as many readers will want to know more about Catherine and leaving out so much of her history and experiences is a true disservice to this historical character that Catherine de Medici truly is. More historical elements might also benefit this book as well.

His head was downward with his eyes lowered to the floor as if he was sulking. I knew I could not change his mind then, and he would have to see that our life would be harmonious with the King’s support as long as we focused on what was righteous and good. So in silence, I sat beside him and laid my head on his lap while he ran his fingers through my hair.”

The intended audience for Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici is likely those with an interest in Catherine de Medici or French history. It is a truly historical fiction novel that is entertaining to read and not overly long at just over four hundred pages. Catherine de Medici is portrayed in a way that makes her relatable and likable making this a great choice for new historical fiction readers. Those who are just venturing into this genre will find Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici easy to read and digest without being overwhelmed by the historical elements.

After I am gone, I want you to promise me that you will continue to do what is best for the people of France no matter what the cost. I have no faith that anyone else will, and I will leave this world in peace knowing that you will be a great queen and serve the people of France.”

All in all, Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici tells a fascinating story of a prominent historical figure but omits important historical details and events that this figure is known for. The great writing and engaging storytelling earn Her Side of the Story: A Psychically Channeled Untold Novel Of Catherine de Medici a four out of five rating. Readers will enjoy the story but may need to follow up the book with additional research or reading to learn more about the fascinating Catherine de Medici.
